How to disable pagination in the home page

I want to disable the pagination on my home page and to make it display only the last 4 posts instead of all of them. Should I change the code in the index file and if so, how to change it? I have not purchased the theme. Do I have to purchase it in order to change the index.php file ?

First of all you don't have to purchase the theme to edit the code. The only things you are not allowed to do is to delete sponsored links in the footer.
To set only 4 posts per page you have to set the number of post on page Settings --> Reading in the dashboard of your website.
